CHAPTER TWENTY

“ This begs the question. Who or what brought those out? This Temple’s defenses, or Lucifer?” Leeha asks out loud.

I turn to her and frown, waving at the dead creatures. “You don’t think those were from Lucifer?”

Leeha frowns but answers slowly, “I’m not sure. It could be Lucifer. But, Binna,” she asks, turning towards her. “Does the Temple have its own defenses?”

Binna grimaces and nods slowly.

“It does. The way my people died isn’t something we have ever seen the Temple defend with. But I remember my father saying that there are many things defending the Temple that even our people aren’t aware of. So, maybe these Sinister Were some of the defenders?”

I can hear the hesitation in her tone. As if she isn’t 100 percent sure. I can’t blame her. With a sigh, I nod.

“So why would the Temple be attacking us if you let us in?”

“I think I know the answer to that one,” Tia offers. “Somehow, even though we got inside the front door, the rest of the Temple seems to be on high alert for attacks?”

I think about that. So, it’s possible that Binna letting us in made the defenses at the door let us pass. But, maybe the rest of the Temple is in active mode? Is that because of what’s inside that black building?

“You think we will continue to be attacked as we try to get closer to that building?” I ask.

“I’m not sure,” Binna answers, hesitantly. “We usually don’t come inside the Temple. We typically post ceremonial guards outside each cardinal door. Once a year, someone opens the door, looks inside to make sure all is good, and closes it.”

“And when was the last time that was done?” I ask her.

She tilts her head in contemplation before answering. “Maybe two years ago? The first death of a Mer who came close to the Temple was during a changing of the guards. At that time, the four who were to replace the original guards were the ones who died. After that, it took another five deaths before we figured out coming too close to here was fatal.”

“Wait!” I say, holding my hand up quickly. “The deaths started two years ago? I’ve only been on this world for maybe a year and a half, and that’s being generous.”

I turn back to look at the black building.

Leeha comes up next to me and puts her hand on my back. “So that means, Alex, that these deaths that Lucifer caused, if that’s him in there, occurred long before you were here. He didn’t know about your body back then. So why was he killing folks before you were even on Boromour?”

“I’m not sure. But I know Lucifer didn’t have any idea I was here until we met up. He was surprised at seeing me, like I was an unexpected guest at his party.”

“So do we turn back or keep going?” Bridget asks the obvious question.

I look at my group, taking them all in. Bo, who is new to the group but has become almost family to me.
